Iran Among AFC’s Leading Federations

President Taj emphasized the federation’s commitment to inclusivity and grassroots development, aligning with FIFA’s core slogan “Football for All.”

Iran Among AFC’s Leading Federations

According to the official website of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, Mehdi Taj, President of FFIRI, spoke at the Iran Grassroots National Forum, highlighting Iran’s pioneering role in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and reaffirming the federation’s mission to make football accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

“It’s a privilege to be part of this gathering,” said Taj. “Iran’s Football Federation is considered one of AFC’s exemplary members, especially in terms of investment and activities at the grassroots level. The AFC is serious about aligning with FIFA's core slogan: ‘Football for All.’ This means extending football opportunities to those often overlooked—children with limited access, those without local clubs or proper platforms, or individuals unable to join professional leagues.”

Taj outlined the federation’s efforts in 2024 (1403 in the Iranian calendar), stating that 171 county-level and 270 provincial grassroots festivals have already been organized across the country.

“We’ve initiated wide-ranging street football programs,” Taj added, “and with the support of experts like Majid Jalali and Mr. Aghamohammadi, we’ve developed inclusive formats so even kids without proper gear—sometimes not even football shoes—can participate in neighborhood tournaments.”

He explained the progression structure: local neighborhoods form teams, which then compete at county levels. From there, county teams advance to provincial tournaments, culminating in a national final held at the FFIRI National Training Center.

“From these competitions, we select standout players to form a special national grassroots team,” said Taj. “These are players we discover in local communities—some of whom didn’t even own shoes last year. From last year’s events alone, 60 players were identified and brought into the federation’s talent pool.”

Taj also highlighted the social responsibility dimension of football development.

“Our responsibility extends beyond national teams and elite clubs. As a federation, we are charged with developing football across all regions, ensuring that even those from underprivileged backgrounds have a chance to participate and thrive.”

“In AFC, we have someone overseeing football development across the continent—who is also the President of the Japan FA. Likewise, here in Iran, we are committed to developing football, futsal, and beach soccer nationwide. Some provinces may lack a top-tier club, but still contribute key players to our national teams.”

He concluded by reiterating the philosophy that underpins all these efforts:

“Football is about joy and inclusion. We must bring the FIFA slogan ‘Football for All’ to life—not just as a motto, but as a mission.”
